Chapter 9 - The Loan Deadline

Daniel’s company owed nearly two million dollars.

A private lender had given him ten days to provide collateral or repay the balance.

The lender’s letter referenced the lake property.

Rebecca had found it inside public court records.

Daniel had promised to transfer the property into a family company.

He expected Margaret to sign during the reunion.

Denise planned the weekend carefully.

Wine.

Family photographs.

A celebratory dinner.

Then the paperwork.

If Margaret resisted, they would accuse her of becoming confused and paranoid.

Daniel had already contacted a physician about evaluating her capacity.

The doctor refused because he had never treated Margaret.

So Denise searched for another.

Margaret learned this from an email Denise accidentally sent to the wrong address.

The recipient was Margaret’s longtime accountant, Marian Cole.

Denise assumed Marian was Daniel’s assistant because they shared a surname.

Marian forwarded everything to Margaret.

The family had not invited her to relax.

They invited her to surrender control before the lender’s deadline.
