Chapter 1 - The Door I Was Never Supposed To Open

I opened my mother’s bedroom door and saw Gwendolyn forcing ice-cold water down her throat.
For a second, I couldn’t understand what I was seeing.
My seventy-eight-year-old mother, Florence, lay helpless in her bed, her body weakened after a stroke, while Gwendolyn stood over her in a cream dress, gripping her jaw with one hand and tilting the pitcher with the other.
“Even your suffering is a burden!”
Gwendolyn’s voice was cold.
Not frustrated.
Not tired.
Cruel.
My briefcase slipped from my hand and hit the floor.
“Stop!”
I crossed the room before I even thought.
I shoved her arm away and dropped beside my mother.
“Mom…”
My voice broke.
“I’m here.”
Florence’s eyes filled with fear.
Not confusion.
Fear.
That was the moment everything inside me changed.
I had trusted Gwendolyn with the woman who raised me.
I believed she was caring for my mother.
I believed every excuse.
The late appointments.
The missed calls.
The bruises she blamed on weakness.
Then Florence’s sleeve slipped down as she reached for my hand.
And I saw them.
Dark marks around her arm.
Finger-shaped bruises.
My hands went cold.
Gwendolyn stepped back.
“You’re misunderstanding what happened.”
But I wasn’t listening anymore.
I quietly pulled out my phone.
Started recording.
For the first time, I wanted proof.
Not explanations.
Proof.
Then Florence looked toward the medical bag sitting beside her bed.
Her lips trembled.
“She hid them…”
I followed her eyes.
The bag.
The one Gwendolyn always carried.
The one she never let anyone touch.
I grabbed it.
And when I opened it, several hidden pill bottles spilled across the blanket.
Gwendolyn’s face changed instantly.
