Chapter 3 - The Mother Who Was Too Afraid To Speak
The doctor asked Florence simple questions.
She answered slowly.
Painfully.
But every answer made the picture clearer.
Gwendolyn controlled everything.
The food.
The medication.
The visitors.
Even the phone calls.
“She said nobody cared anymore,” Florence whispered.
I looked at Gwendolyn.
“That’s what you told her?”
Gwendolyn crossed her arms.
“She was confused because of the stroke.”
The doctor looked at the bruises again.
“And these?”
Silence.
That silence told me enough.
Later that evening, I stayed beside my mother.
She held my hand.
“I tried to tell you.”
Those words hurt.
Because she had.
She had tried.
I just didn’t listen.
Then she pointed toward the medical bag.
“There’s something else.”
I opened it again.
Hidden underneath the medication bottles was a small envelope.
My name was written on it.
Lucas.
My mother had prepared something for me.
Before she became too weak to explain.
Inside was a copy of a property document.
