I studied the document for almost an hour.
The house.
My mother’s property.
The place she spent thirty years building.
The document claimed Florence had transferred ownership.
To Gwendolyn.
I looked at the signature.
Something felt wrong.
My mother noticed.
“She never let me sign anything.”

I confronted her downstairs.
“You forged this.”
She didn’t panic.
That surprised me.
Instead, she smiled.
“You’re accusing me because you’re guilty.”
“Guilty of what?”
“Abandoning your mother.”
The attack was calculated.
She wanted me defending myself.
But I saw something behind her eyes.
She wasn’t worried about the accusation.
She was worried about the document.
