Chapter 7 - The Locked Door

Margaret walked toward the lake house.
Her wet clothing grew heavier with every step.
Daniel followed.
“We need to talk privately.”
“No.”
“Mom, this is embarrassing.”
“For whom?”
She reached the front door and inserted the silver key.
The new lock turned smoothly.
Daniel tried his old key.
It stopped halfway.
Denise attempted the digital code.
The keypad rejected it.
Tyler looked from one parent to the other.
“You said we were staying all weekend.”
Daniel ignored him.
Margaret stepped inside and blocked the doorway with her body.
“You may collect personal belongings under supervision.”
Daniel stared at her.
“You can’t lock me out of my father’s house.”
Rebecca answered from behind him.
“Edward’s estate no longer owns it.”
That sentence silenced everyone.
