Chapter 23 - Evan Finally Understands

Evan requested a meeting with Margaret.

They sat on opposite sides of a supervised room.

His confidence was gone.

“I thought everyone would laugh.”

“They did.”

“I didn’t think you’d actually drown.”

“You knew I could not swim.”

He looked down.

“Dad said you exaggerate.”

“Did your father place his hands on my back?”

“No.”

“Did he move your arms?”

“No.”

“Then this decision belongs to you.”

Evan’s eyes filled with tears.

“What happens now?”

“That depends on the court and what you choose to learn.”

“Will you forgive me?”

Margaret paused.

“Forgiveness is not the same as avoiding consequences.”

Evan nodded slowly.

For the first time, he apologized without mentioning his future, his reputation, or what his father told him.

Margaret believed he finally understood a small part of the harm.

She did not promise forgiveness.

Truth was enough for that day.
