Chapter 29 - Daniel Comes to the Shore
Daniel arrived two years after the incident.
He waited outside the gate.
Margaret chose to meet him near the road.
He looked older.
His marriage to Denise had ended.
Each blamed the other for the financial collapse.
Daniel worked for a smaller construction firm and rented an apartment.
“I came to apologize,” he said.
Margaret waited.
“I treated everything you had as if it existed for me.”
She said nothing.
“I taught my sons that your boundaries were selfish.”
“Yes.”
“I knew Evan was cruel sometimes. I protected him because confronting him would mean confronting myself.”
Margaret studied her son.
“Why now?”
“Because losing everything did not change me. Being alone long enough to hear my own excuses did.”
He did not ask for money.
He did not ask for access.
He did not ask her to speak to Evan.
Margaret allowed him to write letters.
