Chapter 2 - The Family Weekend
Daniel had called the gathering a family reunion.
Margaret knew better.
Her son had not invited her to the lake house for companionship.
He wanted her signature.
The property had belonged to Margaret’s husband, Edward, before his death.
Daniel told everyone Edward intended the house to pass directly to him.
For years, Margaret allowed that assumption to stand.
She had no desire to argue while grieving.
Daniel and Denise began treating the lake house as their own.
They hosted parties.
Replaced furniture without asking.
Allowed Evan and Tyler to use the boat.
Margaret still paid the taxes, insurance, dock repairs, and maintenance.
Whenever she mentioned those costs, Daniel said:
“You’re keeping it for us anyway.”
Three weeks before the reunion, Daniel mailed her a transfer agreement.
The document would place the lake house, shoreline, dock, and surrounding acreage under a family company controlled by him.
Margaret did not sign it.
Then Denise called.
“We’re all worried about you managing property alone.”
Margaret understood the real concern.
Daniel’s construction company was drowning in debt.
Evan had been expelled from college.
Tyler owed money from a failed cryptocurrency scheme.
The lake property was worth more than any of them realized.
