Chapter 16 - The Medical Examination

Rebecca insisted Margaret visit the emergency clinic.
The cold water had caused mild hypothermia.
Her right shoulder was bruised from striking the pier support.
There was no fracture.
The doctor documented every injury.
A deputy arrived to take a statement.
Margaret hesitated before naming Evan.
He was nineteen.
Still young enough to make foolish decisions.
Old enough to know that pushing a non-swimmer into deep water could kill her.
Daniel called repeatedly.
Margaret did not answer.
Then Evan sent a message.
I DIDN’T MEAN FOR YOU TO GET HURT.
A second message followed.
DAD SAID YOU WOULDN’T PRESS CHARGES.
That sentence made the decision clearer.
Evan was not asking forgiveness.
He was confirming protection.
Margaret gave the deputy the full truth.
She did not demand an arrest.
