Chapter 3 - Edward’s Final Instruction
Edward had died eighteen months earlier.
Two weeks before his death, he asked Margaret to meet him in the lake-house study.
He placed a thick envelope on the desk.
“Daniel thinks this place belongs to him.”
“He’s your son.”
“That does not answer what I said.”
Edward had discovered that Daniel used the property address as collateral on a private loan application.
The application was rejected because Daniel was not an owner.
Edward confronted him.
Daniel apologized and claimed he had misunderstood.
Edward did not believe him.
He amended the estate plan.
The house, land, lake rights, and mineral access transferred into a trust controlled solely by Margaret.
Daniel would inherit nothing from the property unless Margaret later chose to include him.
Edward also ordered a private survey.
The survey revealed that the Cole property extended beneath most of the lake.
The family did not merely own a house near the water.
Margaret’s trust controlled the water access, dock rights, and shoreline leases used by three neighboring properties.
The estate was worth almost nine million dollars.
Edward warned her:
“Do not tell them until you know whether they love you or what you hold.”

Then her grandson pushed her into the lake.
