Chapter 17 - Edward’s Hidden Recording
Rebecca returned the next morning with another object.
A small digital recorder.
Edward had left it in his attorney’s safe.
The recording was made after Daniel’s first unauthorized loan attempt.
Edward spoke slowly.
“Daniel believes Margaret’s compassion is a weakness he can inherit around.”
He described confronting his son.
Daniel admitted he expected the property eventually and saw no harm in using it early.
Edward warned him never to do it again.
Daniel promised.
Then Edward addressed Margaret.
“If he repeats this after I am gone, do not rescue him from the meaning of his own decision.”
Margaret cried quietly.
Edward had known her deepest danger.
Not Daniel’s greed.
Her own instinct to save him.
