Chapter 9 - Her Mother’s Confession
Margaret Carter’s voice filled Adrian’s headphones.
“I won’t sign it.”
Victor Hale replied, “Then Richard will tell the police you authorized the transfers.”
“I didn’t.”
“Evidence can be created.”
The recording was eighteen years old.
Margaret sounded younger, frightened, and desperate.
Richard entered the conversation next.
“Sign the statement, Margaret. Andrew will take the blame, and the company survives.”
“He is innocent.”
“He is competition.”
A chair scraped.
Then Rose Carter spoke.
“If you do this, Richard, I will expose you.”
Richard laughed.
“With what proof?”
“With the original ledger.”
The recording ended.
Evelyn removed the headphones slowly.
“My mother knew.”
“She objected,” Adrian said.
“And then she stayed.”
Adrian had no answer for that.
The ledger showed everything.
Richard and Victor had diverted Whitmore funds into a secret acquisition vehicle.
When Andrew discovered the transfer, Victor fabricated records using his digital signature.
Margaret had been forced to sign a false witness statement.
Rose copied the real ledger and hid it inside the necklace.
But there was still one missing detail.
The files did not show who had stolen money from Carter Industries during the past two years.
That theft belonged to Grant.
Adrian opened another folder.
Inside were photographs of Grant meeting a private lender named Mason Cross.
Cross financed illegal gambling operations and used failing companies to launder money.
Grant had borrowed millions.
When he could not repay, he began draining Carter Industries.
The company’s collapse had not been caused by Richard’s old crime alone.
Grant had accelerated it to save himself.
Suddenly, the bedroom lights went out.
The electronic door lock released.
Adrian moved in front of Evelyn.
The door opened.
Grant stood there with Victor and two armed security guards.
He held up his phone.
“I heard everything.”
Richard appeared behind him, confused.
Grant looked at his father.
“Adrian came to destroy you.”
Then he looked at Adrian.
“And Evelyn planned to help him.”
Richard stared at his daughter with pure hatred.
“You ungrateful little traitor.”
Grant smiled.
