Chapter 5 - The Room Without Windows

The rehabilitation center had been closed for six years.
Dust covered the lobby.
Plastic sheets hung from the ceiling.
Evelyn followed the faint sound of a medical monitor down a dark hallway.
At the end, she found a steel door.
Behind it was a small room with no windows.
Rose lay in a hospital bed, weak but conscious.
“Grandma.”
Evelyn rushed to her.
Rose began crying.
“They said you stopped visiting,” Evelyn whispered.
Rose shook her head.
On the table beside the bed was an oxygen machine and a stack of unsigned legal papers.
One document transferred Rose’s remaining voting shares in Carter Industries to Grant.
Another declared her mentally incompetent.
Evelyn photographed every page.
Then footsteps sounded in the corridor.
Grant entered with two security guards.
“You never knew when to stop,” he said.
Evelyn stood between him and Rose.
“You kidnapped her.”
“She is receiving private care.”
“In an abandoned building?”
Grant’s expression sharpened.
“Give me your phone and the necklace.”
Evelyn backed toward the bed.
One guard reached for her.
Before he touched her, the hallway lights went out.
A crash echoed near the entrance.
Then a man’s voice spoke from the darkness.
“Take your hands off her.”
Adrian stepped into the emergency lighting.
He was not wearing the old-man mask.
Evelyn had never seen him before.
Grant had.
The color drained from his face.
“Whitmore.”
Adrian moved quickly.
He struck one guard’s wrist, forced him against the wall, and kicked the second man’s weapon beneath a cabinet.
Within seconds, both guards were down.
Grant ran.
Adrian started after him, but Evelyn shouted.
“My grandmother!”
The oxygen machine had stopped when the power failed.
Adrian turned back without hesitation.
He helped Evelyn connect the emergency tank and called a private medical team.
Rose’s breathing stabilized.
Evelyn looked up at the stranger.
“Who are you?”
He studied her face.
“A man your family buried.”
Before Evelyn could question him, he picked up one of Rose’s legal documents.
At the bottom was a witness signature.

The name belonged to the lawyer arranging Evelyn’s marriage.
👉 Evelyn realized the wedding contract and Rose’s imprisonment had been designed by the same person—and Adrian intended to let the wedding happen anyway.
