Chapter 16 - The Promise Between Their Fathers

On the recording, Andrew Whitmore looked exhausted but calm.
Rose sat beside him holding the original ledger.
Andrew explained that Richard had already begun framing him.
He knew his company would be taken.
He also knew Rose was risking her safety by preserving the evidence.
Then he said something Adrian never expected.
“Rose has created a protected trust using the last clean shares from both companies.”
Adrian looked toward Rose.
She was watching the recovered video from her hospital room.
Andrew continued.
“The trust cannot be controlled by Richard, Victor, or me. It will pass to Rose’s first granddaughter who proves she has acted independently of the Carter board.”
Evelyn stared at the screen.
Rose had designed the trust for her.
Not because she knew Evelyn personally—Evelyn had not yet been born—but because Rose feared her sons would corrupt the company.
Andrew had contributed several patents to the trust.
The assets had grown quietly for nearly thirty years.
Their current value exceeded one hundred and twenty million dollars.
Enough to restore the employee pensions.
Enough to repay legitimate creditors.
Enough to keep Carter Industries alive without Richard or Grant.
Andrew’s final words were for his son.
“Adrian, justice means returning what was taken. Revenge means taking more. Choose carefully.”
The recording ended.
Adrian sat motionless.
For years, he had imagined his father asking him to punish the Carters.
Instead, Andrew had asked him to stop the cycle.
Evelyn placed the silver pin in Adrian’s hand.
“You found the truth.”
“I nearly became what destroyed him.”
“But you stopped.”
“Because you forced me to.”
“No. I gave you a choice. You made it.”
Rose’s trust appointed Evelyn as temporary steward.
She could not sell the company for personal profit.
She could only restructure it, repay victims, and appoint an independent board.
Evelyn accepted.
Then she offered Adrian leadership of the restored Whitmore technology division.
He refused at first.
“I entered your life through a lie.”
“You can leave the lie behind.”
“And us?”
Evelyn looked away.
Their wedding had never been real.
But the bond formed during the investigation was no longer false.
Before she could answer, the prosecutor called.
Richard had requested a private meeting.

He claimed Grant was planning to have Evelyn killed from inside jail.
👉 Richard offered to save the daughter he had sacrificed, but only if Evelyn helped him escape the punishment he deserved.
