Chapter 1 - The Face Beneath the Mask
The lock clicked behind Evelyn Carter.
She stood beside the fireplace in the bridal suite, still wearing the white gown her mother had chosen for her. Her veil had been removed, but the diamond necklace around her throat felt heavier than chains.
Across the room, her new husband leaned on a silver cane.
Alden Whitmore was supposed to be seventy-eight years old.
He was supposed to be weak, lonely, and desperate enough to pay the Carter family’s debts in exchange for a young bride.
Evelyn’s hands tightened against her chest.
“Please… don’t hurt me.”
Alden turned away from the locked door.
Then he reached beneath his jaw.
Evelyn watched the wrinkled skin stretch.
Peel.
Separate.
The old man’s face came away in his hand.
Beneath it was a man no older than thirty-two, with black hair, sharp gray eyes, and a thin scar across his right eyebrow.
He placed the mask on the vanity.
“Relax.”
Evelyn stared at him.
“You were never my wife,” he said. “You were the key.”
He pulled a folder from inside his tuxedo and threw it onto the bed.
Property transfers.
Company shares.
Secret accounts.
Her father’s signature appeared on nearly every page.
“Your family sold everything to protect themselves,” the stranger said. “Tonight, my revenge begins.”
Evelyn slowly removed the diamond necklace.
She placed it beside the mask.
Then she looked directly at him.
“Then you chose the wrong daughter.”
For the first time, the man hesitated.
“My name is Adrian,” he said.
“I know.”
His expression changed.
Evelyn reached beneath the lace around her wrist and removed a tiny black memory card.
“I also know your father didn’t steal from mine.”
Adrian’s eyes dropped to the card.
“Someone framed both of them.”
A hard knock struck the door.
Her father’s voice came from the hallway.
“Evelyn? Open the door. We need the necklace back.”
Adrian glanced at the diamonds on the vanity.
Evelyn did not move.
