Chapter 17 - Her Father’s Final Bargain
Richard Carter entered the interview room wearing a gray detention uniform.
For the first time in Evelyn’s life, he looked small.
No tailored suit.
No assistants.
No family name protecting him.
“You came,” he said.
“I came to hear the truth.”
Richard leaned closer.
“Grant paid someone before the wedding. If he was arrested, the order was to eliminate anyone controlling Rose’s trust.”
“Who?”
“I don’t know his name.”
“Then why should I believe you?”
“Because I found this in Grant’s office.”
Richard slid a storage key across the table.
The prosecutor watched from behind the glass.
Richard wanted immunity from the guardianship scheme and a reduced sentence for the Whitmore fraud.
Evelyn did not respond.
“I am your father,” he said.
“You remembered that when you needed something.”
“I was trying to save what I built.”
“You sold me.”
“I knew Alden wouldn’t hurt you.”
“You didn’t even know who Alden was.”
Richard’s eyes shifted.
Evelyn finally understood.
He had suspected Alden was not real.
But he had accepted the deal anyway because the money mattered more than the risk to her.
Richard reached for her hand.
She pulled away.
“Help me,” he said.
Evelyn stood.
“I will give the key to investigators. I will not bargain for you.”
“If I go to prison, this family is finished.”
“This family ended when fear became more important than love.”
The storage key opened a locker containing cash, forged passports, and a photograph of Evelyn leaving Rose’s hospital.
A name was written on the back.
Cal Mercer.
Adrian recognized him as a private security contractor who had once worked for Victor.
Federal agents traced Mercer to an unfinished office tower owned by a Carter shell company.
Inside, they found surveillance equipment pointed toward Evelyn’s temporary apartment.
Mercer was gone.
But one screen showed a live camera feed from Rose’s hospital corridor.
Then the feed shifted.
Margaret stepped out of the elevator carrying flowers.
