Chapter 15 - The Mother Who Stayed Silent
Margaret denied authorizing the transfer.
“I haven’t entered Victor’s office in months.”
“The system has your fingerprint,” Evelyn said.
Margaret stared at the record.
Then she remembered something.
During the wedding rehearsal, Victor had asked her to verify a revised trust document using a small fingerprint scanner.
He claimed it protected Rose’s medical care.
Instead, he had captured her biometric signature.
Adrian examined the authorization.
“The transfer was scheduled, but the second approval still had to happen manually.”
“By Helen,” Evelyn said.
The prosecutor traced Helen’s travel records.
She had boarded a private plane bound for Montreal.
But the aircraft landed unexpectedly in Vermont because of a mechanical warning.
Local authorities detained her before she crossed the border.
Helen offered information immediately.
She explained that Victor had created New Horizons with Richard’s knowledge.
Richard used it to silence Rose and pressure other elderly shareholders.
Grant later used the same network to steal pension funds.
Helen managed the accounts.
She had planned to escape with the forty million after the Carter family destroyed one another.
“But Victor kept a protection file,” Helen said. “It contains evidence against judges, bankers, and officials who approved the guardianship orders.”
“Where is it?” Evelyn asked.
Helen smiled.
“Inside Andrew Whitmore’s original patent vault.”
Adrian froze.
His father’s laboratory had burned down years earlier.
Helen claimed one underground vault survived.
Victor had acquired the property through a shell company and used it to hide evidence.
Adrian had avoided the ruins because they reminded him of his father’s destruction.
Now he understood that the place he feared most might hold the final proof.
He and Evelyn drove there with investigators.
Beneath the burned laboratory floor, they found a sealed steel door.
Adrian inserted his father’s silver pin into the lock.
It opened.
Inside were boxes of files and one video camera.
The final recording showed Andrew Whitmore sitting beside Rose Carter.
He looked directly into the lens.
“If Adrian ever sees this, tell him I do not want revenge to become his life.”
