Chapter 3 - A Dead Man’s Signature

Andrew Whitmore had been dead for seven years.
Yet his electronic signature appeared on a transaction made only eighteen months earlier.
Evelyn copied the account number from her father’s papers and searched through old corporate filings.
The payment had moved through three shell companies before reaching a private trust in the Cayman Islands.
The trust’s listed beneficiary was hidden.
But the approving officer was not.
Grant Carter.
Evelyn stared at her brother’s name until sunrise.
At first, she believed Grant had stolen from the company alone.
Then she found another transaction.
This one was older.
It had been created during the year Andrew Whitmore was publicly accused of fraud.
The money had left Andrew’s company and entered a Carter-controlled acquisition fund.
Two days later, Richard Carter had purchased Andrew’s patents for almost nothing.
The press called Andrew a thief.
Investors abandoned him.
His wife died from an illness shortly afterward.
Andrew died two years later, officially from heart failure.
Evelyn suspected shame had killed him long before his body stopped.
She printed the records and hid them in the lining of an old suitcase.
Then she visited her grandmother, Rose Carter, in a private nursing home.
Rose had suffered a stroke and rarely spoke.
But when Evelyn placed Andrew Whitmore’s photograph in front of her, Rose’s hand began to tremble.
“Grandma, did Dad frame him?”
Rose struggled to lift one finger.
Then she pointed toward the diamond necklace Evelyn was wearing.
The necklace had belonged to her.
Richard had insisted Evelyn wear it at family events, calling it a symbol of Carter loyalty.
Rose gripped the chain and whispered one broken word.
“Key.”
Evelyn leaned closer.
“Key to what?”
Rose’s eyes filled with tears.
Before she could answer, Grant entered the room.
He smiled when he saw Evelyn.
But his gaze went immediately to the necklace.
“You shouldn’t upset Grandma.”
Evelyn stood.
Grant blocked the doorway.
“Give me the necklace.”
“No.”
His smile vanished.
“You have no idea what you’re carrying.”
Evelyn stepped around him.
“I’m starting to.”
That evening, Rose was moved to another facility without Evelyn’s knowledge.

And every record of her location disappeared.
👉 When Evelyn traced the ambulance that removed Rose, she found it had never taken her grandmother to another nursing home.
