Chapter 7 - The Wedding Trap

Grant returned home before dawn.
He told Richard that Rose had been moved again and that Evelyn had found nothing.
He did not mention Adrian.
He did not reveal the recording.
Grant had spent years living beneath his father’s control, and now he finally saw a way to remove everyone above him.
Richard.
Evelyn.
Adrian.
Even Rose.
Grant copied the recording onto a private drive and contacted Victor Hale, the Carter family attorney.
Victor had arranged the original fraud against Andrew Whitmore.
He had also created Alden’s marriage contract.
Grant played part of the recording.
Victor listened without blinking.
“So Whitmore’s son is alive,” he said.
“And he thinks he’s trapping us.”
Victor poured two drinks.
“Then we let him.”
On the morning of the wedding, Evelyn dressed in silence.
Her mother entered carrying the diamond necklace.
“You will wear this.”
Evelyn allowed Margaret to fasten it.
For years, she had believed her mother was merely weak.
That morning, she saw something else.
Fear.
“Why does Grant want this necklace?” Evelyn asked.
Margaret’s fingers stopped.
“I don’t know.”
“You’re lying.”
Tears appeared in Margaret’s eyes.
“Some truths destroy everyone.”
“Silence already did.”
Margaret moved toward the door, then whispered, “Your grandmother hid evidence inside it.”
Evelyn’s heartbeat quickened.
“What evidence?”
“I never saw it. Richard said the clasp could only be opened with a matching pin.”
“Where is the pin?”
Margaret looked toward the hallway.
“Andrew Whitmore had it.”
Then she left.
At the ceremony, Adrian waited beneath the Alden mask.
Richard smiled as Evelyn approached.
Grant stood beside him, calm and confident.
Victor held the marriage documents.
Evelyn signed.
Adrian signed as Alden.
Richard transferred the voting shares.
The trap appeared complete.
But when Victor placed his notary seal on the agreement, Grant quietly sent one message.
