Chapter 18 - The Last Attack
Evelyn called hospital security.
No one answered.
Adrian drove while Evelyn contacted the federal agents assigned to Rose.
The man in medical scrubs entered the stairwell behind Margaret.
On the camera feed, Evelyn saw a metal object beneath his jacket.
“Mom, answer,” she whispered as the phone rang.
Margaret finally picked up.
“Evelyn?”
“Do not go to Grandma’s room. Walk past the nurses’ station and pull the fire alarm.”
Margaret heard the urgency.
She did not ask questions.
She changed direction.
Mercer followed faster.
Margaret reached for the alarm.
He grabbed her arm.
She dropped the flowers and screamed.
The nurse at the desk looked up.
Mercer pushed Margaret into the wall and ran toward Rose’s room.
Rose’s federal guard stepped into the hallway.
Mercer turned and entered a supply room.
By the time Adrian and Evelyn arrived, the floor was under lockdown.
Agents searched every room.
They found an open ventilation panel.
Mercer had moved into the maintenance system.
Adrian studied the building map.
“The vents connect to the backup generator room.”
Evelyn understood.
If Mercer cut the generator and main power, Rose’s medical equipment would fail during the confusion.
They raced downstairs with two agents.
Mercer was already near the controls.
He swung a heavy wrench at Adrian.
Adrian ducked and drove his shoulder into Mercer’s chest.
The men crashed against a metal cabinet.
Mercer raised the wrench again.
Evelyn pulled the emergency shutdown lever beside him.
The generator’s protective cage locked automatically, trapping Mercer’s arm between the bars without crushing it.
He dropped the weapon.
Agents restrained him.
Upstairs, Rose remained safe.
Margaret had a bruised shoulder but no serious injuries.
When Evelyn entered the room, Margaret began to apologize.
Evelyn hugged her before she finished.
It was not complete forgiveness.
But it was the first honest embrace they had shared in years.
Mercer confessed that Grant had ordered the attack and Victor had provided the hospital layout.
