Chapter 13 - The Price of Revenge

Adrian was questioned for eleven hours.
He admitted creating the Alden identity.
He admitted manipulating the Carter family into transferring shares.
He admitted entering a marriage contract under a false name.
His lawyers argued that he had been gathering evidence and had cooperated with investigators before the wedding.
The prosecutor disagreed with some of his methods.
Evelyn waited outside the federal building.
She could have gone home.
But she no longer had a home.
Her apartment was gone.
Her father’s estate had been frozen.
The hotel had become a crime scene.
Margaret sat beside her on a bench.
“I don’t expect you to forgive me,” her mother said.
“Good.”
Margaret lowered her eyes.
“I should have taken you and Grant away when you were children.”
“You protected Grant every time he failed.”
“I thought Richard would destroy him if I didn’t.”
“So you let him become Richard.”
Margaret began crying quietly.
Evelyn felt pain, but not cruelty.
“I need distance,” she said. “Maybe someday we can rebuild something honest. But it cannot begin with excuses.”
Margaret nodded.
At dawn, Adrian emerged.
He had not been arrested, but he had signed an agreement to surrender documents, testify fully, and accept court supervision while the false-identity charges were reviewed.
Evelyn stood.
“What happens now?”
“The prosecutor may offer a deferred prosecution agreement because I disclosed the identity before the operation and helped recover the pension money.”
“And if she doesn’t?”
“I face the consequences.”
Evelyn studied him.
For the first time, Adrian did not look like the cold man behind the mask.
He looked tired.
Human.
“I meant what I said,” he told her. “The marriage will be annulled. You owe me nothing.”
“You still owe the employees.”
“I know.”
“And Rose.”
“I know.”
“And your father’s name deserves more than revenge.”
Adrian looked toward the sunrise.
“I don’t know how to build anything. I spent years learning only how to destroy.”
Evelyn stood beside him.
May you like
“Then start by repairing what you broke.”
👉 Adrian believed the battle was over, but Evelyn soon discovered someone had emptied the employee pension recovery account before the arrests.
