Chapter 11 - Rose Walked Into the Ballroom
The bridal suite doors opened.
Two federal agents entered first.
Behind them came Rose Carter in a wheelchair, wrapped in a blue coat, with a medical nurse at her side.
Margaret walked beside her.
Richard’s face collapsed.
“Mother?”
Rose looked at him with a grief deeper than anger.
“You should have listened when I told you truth survives the fire.”
Grant moved toward the window.
An agent blocked him.
Victor began speaking rapidly.
“This is a domestic misunderstanding. No one has authorized—”
A federal prosecutor entered.
“We have authorization.”
She held up search warrants for Carter Industries, Victor’s law office, Richard’s home, and Grant’s offshore accounts.
Richard looked at Evelyn.
“You did this.”
“No,” Evelyn said. “You did.”
The ballroom broadcast continued.
Guests crowded beneath the screens.
Employees watched their executives being handcuffed inside the bridal suite.
Richard turned to Margaret.
“You brought her here?”
Margaret was shaking, but she did not look away.
“I spent eighteen years being afraid of you.”
“You signed the statement.”
“Because you threatened to take my children.”
Evelyn’s expression tightened.
Margaret continued.
“But fear is not an excuse for what I allowed you to do.”
Grant laughed bitterly.
“Don’t pretend you’re innocent, Mom.”
“I’m not.”
Her answer silenced him.
“I gave the prosecutor the original letters,” Margaret said. “The ones Richard made me hide.”
Victor went pale.
The letters proved he had created the false accounts used to frame Andrew Whitmore.
Adrian looked at Rose.
“Did my father know?”
Rose reached for his hand.
“He knew Richard betrayed him. He never knew Margaret tried to help.”
Adrian’s eyes became wet, but his voice remained controlled.
Grant suddenly grabbed the necklace and threw it into the fireplace.
Flames rose around the diamonds.
Evelyn gasped.
Grant smiled wildly.
“No necklace. No evidence.”
Rose shook her head.
“The necklace was never the only copy.”
Then the elevator bell rang outside.
Another group of officers entered with Mason Cross in custody.
Cross looked directly at Grant.
