Chapter 14 - The Missing Forty Million
The federal asset team recovered most of Grant’s stolen funds.
But forty million dollars had vanished hours before the wedding.
The transfer had not been made by Grant.
It had been authorized using Rose Carter’s voting credentials.
Rose was in the hospital at the time.
Someone had copied her biometric signature.
Evelyn reviewed the access logs.
The approval originated from Victor Hale’s office.
But Victor was already in custody when the transfer occurred.
That meant another person inside his firm had activated a timed transaction.
The money had been routed into a charitable foundation called New Horizons.
Evelyn recognized the name.
New Horizons operated the nursing home where Rose had lived.
She and Adrian visited the foundation’s registered address.
It led to an empty office.
Inside, they found shredded medical records, boxes of unused medication, and photographs of elderly patients.
New Horizons had been taking control of vulnerable patients’ assets through fraudulent guardianship orders.
Rose was not the only victim.
Victor had used the organization for years.
Adrian found a server hidden behind a false wall.
Before he could remove it, smoke entered the room.
The building’s alarm did not sound.
Someone had set fire to the records room downstairs.
Adrian grabbed the server.
Evelyn searched the back office.
“Leave it!” he shouted.
“There are patient files!”
“The ceiling is coming down.”
She found a metal case beneath a desk.
Adrian pulled her away as flames crossed the doorway.
They escaped through a rear window seconds before the roof partially collapsed.
Outside, Evelyn coughed against Adrian’s shoulder.
He still held the server.
She still held the case.
Inside were passports, bank cards, and guardianship seals.
One passport belonged to Victor’s senior partner, Helen Ward.
Helen had been present at every Carter family board meeting.
She had also disappeared the morning after the wedding.
The server revealed the missing forty million had been transferred to a bank in Switzerland.
The account required two people to access it.
