Chapter 8 - The Camera in the Chandelier
After Adrian removed the mask, Evelyn placed the necklace on the vanity.
They heard Richard knocking outside.
Adrian ignored him.
He examined the clasp under the light.
“There’s no visible opening.”
“My mother said your father had a pin.”
Adrian touched the scar near his eyebrow.
“When my father died, he left me a silver tie pin.”
He removed it from his tuxedo.
The pin fit perfectly into a tiny hole beside the diamond clasp.
A hidden compartment opened.
Inside was a second memory card.
Adrian stared at it.
“My father never told me.”
“He may not have known Rose hid it there.”
Adrian inserted the card into his secure laptop.
Encrypted files appeared.
One was labeled WHITMORE-CARTER ORIGINAL LEDGER.
Another was labeled V.H. RECORDING.
Before they could open either file, Adrian noticed a red reflection in the mirror.
He looked toward the chandelier.
A camera lens was hidden between two crystals.
He immediately closed the laptop.
“They’re watching.”
Evelyn’s face remained calm.
“Then give them what they expect.”
Adrian understood.
He grabbed her wrist and raised his voice.
“You lied to me.”
Evelyn pulled away dramatically.
“My family will destroy you.”
Outside, Richard stopped knocking.
Grant watched the feed from a private room downstairs.
On-screen, Adrian appeared furious while Evelyn looked terrified.
Then Adrian swept the documents from the bed.
The papers covered a second device Evelyn had placed beneath the mattress earlier.
It transmitted the real audio to Rose’s attorney and Adrian’s security team.
Evelyn shouted, “You married me for revenge!”
Adrian replied, “And your family will pay before sunrise!”
Grant smiled.
He believed their alliance had collapsed.
Then Adrian moved close enough to whisper against Evelyn’s ear.
“We need the password.”
Evelyn looked toward the old Carter crest carved into the fireplace.
Rose had taught her the family motto when she was a child.
Truth survives the fire.
She typed the phrase.
The files opened.
