Chapter 2 - The Daughter They Sacrificed
Three months before the wedding, Evelyn had been called into her father’s office.
Richard Carter sat behind a mahogany desk surrounded by lawyers, bank notices, and unpaid loan demands.
Her mother, Margaret, stood near the window.
Her older brother, Grant, poured himself a drink as if the family’s collapse were a minor inconvenience.
Richard did not ask Evelyn to sit.
“The company owes eighty-six million dollars,” he said.
Evelyn’s face went still.
“That’s impossible.”
“It is already done.”
Grant avoided her eyes.
Richard slid a photograph across the desk.
It showed an elderly man getting out of a black sedan.
“Alden Whitmore has agreed to settle the debt.”
Evelyn looked at the photograph.
“What does he want?”
Her mother finally spoke.
“A wife.”
The room seemed to shrink.
Evelyn gave a quiet laugh, waiting for someone to admit it was a cruel joke.
No one did.
“You’re selling me.”
“We are protecting your future,” Richard replied.
“My future?”
“You will live in luxury.”
“I already earn my own living.”
Richard’s mouth hardened. “Your accounting job cannot save this family.”
Evelyn looked at Grant.
Her brother had been made chief financial officer two years earlier, despite having no discipline and a history of gambling.
“You handled the company accounts,” she said. “How did this happen?”
Grant’s glass stopped halfway to his mouth.
Richard struck the desk with his palm.
“That is not relevant.”
That reaction told Evelyn it was the only relevant question in the room.
She refused the proposal that night.
The next morning, her bank account was frozen.
Her apartment lease was terminated by a holding company owned by her father.
Her employer received an anonymous allegation that she had stolen confidential records.
Within forty-eight hours, Evelyn had no job, no home, and no access to the trust her grandmother had left her.
Her family had not merely asked her to marry Alden.
They had built a cage around her.
