News organizations that had once called him a criminal issued corrections.
His patents were returned to the Whitmore estate.
Adrian received a deferred prosecution agreement for the Alden identity because he had disclosed his actions, cooperated fully, returned all acquired assets, and helped prevent further crimes.
He was required to perform community service and submit to legal supervision.
He accepted the judgment without complaint.
The false marriage was annulled.
When the judge signed the order, Evelyn felt an unexpected emptiness.
She had never wanted to marry Alden.
But saying goodbye to the legal bond also felt like closing the door on Adrian.
Outside the courthouse, he handed her the silver tie pin.
“This belongs with the trust.”
“It belonged to your father.”
“He used it to protect something meant for both families.”
Evelyn closed his fingers around it.
“Keep it.”
Adrian looked at her.
“I’m leaving for Boston. The Whitmore laboratory is being rebuilt there.”
“You accepted the board position?”
“Only temporarily.”
She smiled faintly.
“You always leave yourself an exit.”
“I thought that was what you wanted.”
“I wanted the lies to end.”
“They have.”
“No,” Evelyn said. “One is still left.”
Adrian waited.
She stepped closer.
“I told myself I only trusted you because we needed each other.”
“And?”
