Chapter 9 - The Night Before the Recording

Emily barely slept.

At 4:30 a.m., she heard Lorraine and Daniel talking in the hallway.

“The transfer must clear before the market opens,” Lorraine said.

“She’ll cooperate.”

“She has become difficult.”

“She has nowhere to go.”

Lorraine lowered her voice.

“What if she calls that lawyer?”

“I cut off her phone service.”

Emily checked her phone.

There was no signal.

But the house’s secure cameras operated through an independent Carter Technologies network.

Rachel could still receive the feed.

Emily pressed her wedding ring three times beneath the blanket.

The tiny blue light on the smoke detector blinked.

The emergency connection was active.

At 6:00 a.m., Daniel entered.

He placed a folder on the nightstand.

Inside were her resignation, share-transfer documents, and a prepared confession admitting she had stolen company funds.

“You will read the statement on camera,” he said.

“No.”

“You haven’t heard the alternative.”

“I’m not confessing to your crimes.”

His expression hardened.

“You’ve been unstable since your father died. Everyone knows it.”

“Because you told them.”

“Because it’s true.”

Lorraine appeared in the doorway wearing a silver satin robe.

“Stop arguing with her. Fear works faster than reason.”

Emily stared at her.

“You know he stole the money.”

Lorraine did not deny it.

“My son did what your father was too weak to do. He built something for himself.”

“With stolen money?”

“With opportunity.”

Daniel reached for Emily’s arm.

She pulled away.

He ordered her to stand.

When she refused, he struck her across the cheek.

The impact threw her sideways against the pillows.

For several seconds, the room became silent.

Daniel stared at his own hand.

Emily touched her face.

The bruise began forming quickly.

Lorraine crossed her arms.

“Now perhaps she’ll listen.”

Emily looked toward the smoke detector.

The blue light continued blinking.

Every word had been sent to Rachel.

Daniel believed he had finally broken her.

Instead, he had just provided the evidence investigators needed.

👉 The next three minutes would determine whether forty-two million dollars vanished—or whether Daniel lost control of everything.
