Chapter 8 - The Mother Who Moved Into Her Place

After Samuel’s funeral, Lorraine stopped pretending the arrangement was temporary.
She moved her clothes into the guest suite.
She ordered the housekeeper to report Emily’s movements.
She sat in Samuel’s chair at breakfast.
When Emily asked her to leave, Daniel accused her of cruelty.
“My mother is grieving too.”
“She barely knew my father.”
“She supported this family while you fell apart.”
Emily looked around the room.
Lorraine had replaced the flowers.
Changed the curtains.
Removed Emily’s mother’s china from the cabinet.
Piece by piece, she was erasing Emily from her own home.
Daniel also took control of the household accounts.
He claimed Emily needed time away from financial stress.
Her credit card stopped working.
Her access to Carter Technologies’ email system was suspended.
Employees were told she was on medical leave.
Rachel documented everything.
The retired accountant Samuel mentioned was named Victor Lang.
He provided years of archived invoices.
Whitmore Family Consulting was only one shell company.
There were nine others.
All received money through contracts approved by Daniel.
Several were linked to Lorraine’s former business partner.
More than thirty million dollars had disappeared.
Rachel believed Daniel intended to move the remaining forty-two million before the fraud became public.
“Why that exact amount?” Emily asked.
“It is the company’s available cash reserve. If he takes it, Carter Technologies may not survive.”
The scheduled transfer required two executive approvals.
Daniel had one.
The second approval belonged to Emily.
A digital authorization had already been created using her forged signature.
But the bank required a final biometric confirmation.
Daniel needed Emily’s face and voice.
That explained the documents downstairs.
He planned to force her to record approval before making her sign the resignation.
Rachel contacted federal investigators, but they needed time to verify the records.
Daniel’s transfer was scheduled for Friday morning.
Thursday night, he entered the bedroom and placed a pale robe on the bed.
“My mother wants a family breakfast tomorrow,” he said.
Emily looked at the robe.
It had been chosen for her.
Like a costume.
“What are we discussing?”
“Your future.”

He locked the bedroom door from the outside when he left.
👉 By sunrise, Emily understood that Daniel did not plan to let her leave the room until she gave him access to the money.
