Chapter 7 - Her Father’s Final Warning
Samuel looked smaller than Emily remembered.
The stroke had weakened his left side, but his mind was clear.
He asked the nurse to leave.
Then he reached beneath his blanket and removed a sealed envelope.
“I made a mistake,” he said.
“What kind of mistake?”
“I trusted Daniel because you loved him.”
Emily sat beside the bed.
“You were right about him.”
Samuel’s eyes filled with pain.
“I wish I hadn’t been.”
Inside the envelope was a handwritten list of account numbers.
Samuel had noticed unexplained vendor payments before his stroke.
He suspected Daniel and Lorraine were using shell companies to steal from Carter Technologies.
He began a private audit.
Three days later, he collapsed inside his office.
“Do you think Daniel caused your stroke?”
“No. The doctors said it was a blocked artery.”
Emily released the breath she had been holding.
“But he used it,” Samuel continued. “Before I could return, he removed my auditors and replaced the finance team.”
“Why didn’t you tell the board?”
“I needed proof. Daniel controls what reaches them.”
Samuel explained that Carter Technologies’ controlling shares were not held directly in Emily’s name.
Years earlier, he had placed them in a protected family trust.
Daniel believed marrying Emily gave him access.
It did not.
Even if Emily signed the transfer documents, the trust required Samuel’s independent authorization.
Daniel’s plan could never legally succeed while Samuel lived.
Emily looked at him.
“Does Daniel know that?”
“He knows there is a trust. He does not know its final terms.”
Samuel gave her the name of a retired accountant who had preserved copies of the company’s original records.
Before Emily left, her father held her hand.
“Daniel will become dangerous when he realizes the money is slipping away.”
“I have cameras.”
“Cameras record what happens. They cannot stop it.”
“I’m not alone.”
Samuel nodded slowly.
“Then promise me you will remember that.”
Emily kissed his forehead.
The following morning, Samuel suffered a second stroke.
He died before Emily reached the hospital.
Daniel held her at the funeral.
Lorraine told guests he had been Samuel’s devoted son-in-law.
