Chapter 1 - The Blue Light Above Them

“Get up.”

Daniel Whitmore stood over his wife with one arm raised.

Emily sat on the edge of their unmade bed, wearing a pale mauve robe. Her dark hair hung around her tear-streaked face, and one hand covered the bruise spreading across her cheek.

She was trying not to shake.

Trying not to give him the reaction he wanted.

Behind Daniel, his mother stood in the open doorway with her arms crossed.

Lorraine Whitmore watched Emily’s pain with the cold patience of someone waiting for a disobedient employee to surrender.

“This is his house,” Lorraine said. “You should be grateful he still lets you sleep here.”

Emily’s fingers tightened around the bedsheet.

Daniel stepped closer.

“You heard my mother. Get dressed, sign the documents downstairs, and leave.”

“What documents?”

“The ones transferring your shares and confirming you stole from the company.”

Emily slowly looked up.

Daniel smiled.

“If you refuse, I call the police. By lunchtime, every newspaper will know you robbed your own father’s business.”

Lorraine’s lips curved.

“And no one will believe a hysterical wife with bruises she probably gave herself.”

Emily’s breathing changed.

Not because she had lost hope.

Because she noticed the smoke detector above Daniel’s shoulder.

A tiny blue light blinked once.

Then again.

The hidden camera was recording everything.

Daniel followed her gaze but saw nothing unusual.

He leaned closer.

“No lawyer is coming. No board member is saving you. Your accounts belong to me now.”

Miles away, attorney Rachel Cole opened her laptop.

The live security feed filled the screen.

Beside it were scanned bank transfers, forged signatures, and a scheduled wire moving forty-two million dollars out of Carter Technologies.

Rachel grabbed her phone.

“Freeze every account,” she ordered.

Back in the bedroom, Daniel’s phone vibrated on the nightstand.

Then Lorraine’s phone began ringing.

Bank alerts filled both screens.

ACCESS SUSPENDED.

TRANSFER BLOCKED.

FRAUD REVIEW INITIATED.

Daniel stared at the messages.

His anger disappeared.

“What did you do?” he whispered.

Emily lowered her hand from her bruised cheek.

For the first time that morning, she looked calm.

“I made sure someone was watching.”

👉 But the camera above the bed had been installed only after Emily discovered that her husband had been preparing this betrayal for nearly a year.
