Chapter 13 - Samuel’s Sealed Letter
The letter was addressed to Emily.
Samuel had written it two years before his stroke.
My dearest daughter,
Today I discovered that Daniel’s mother once worked for me under another name.
I considered telling you immediately.
Then I watched you speak about your marriage, and I saw how deeply you loved him.
I did not want an old mistake to poison your happiness without proof that Daniel had done anything wrong.
So I chose caution.
I may have chosen cowardice.
Samuel explained that he had begun monitoring Daniel’s financial decisions.
For nearly a year, everything appeared legitimate.
Then small vendor irregularities emerged.
Samuel created a hidden audit system and moved the family’s voting shares into an enhanced protective trust.
Emily could benefit from the shares.
No spouse, guardian, or power of attorney could transfer them.
Control would pass to an independent trustee if fraud or coercion were detected.
That trustee was Rachel.
Daniel believed Emily’s signature could give him the company.
It never could.
The final paragraph made Emily cry.

I feared that telling you too soon would make you choose between your father and your husband.
You should never have been asked to make that choice.
Trust your own mind.
You have always been stronger than the people who needed you to doubt it.
Emily held the letter against her chest.
Daniel had spent years convincing her that Samuel viewed her as incapable.
The truth was the opposite.
Her father had built the trust so no one could take her future through fear.
Rachel explained that the frozen accounts would remain under court control.
The company board would meet within forty-eight hours.
Daniel’s allies were already claiming Emily was medically unstable.
Dr. Hale had submitted his report.
Emily wiped her tears.
“Then I’ll attend the meeting.”
“You were assaulted this morning.”
“And tomorrow they’ll say the bruise proves I’m emotional.”
Rachel studied her.
“What do you want?”
“My seat.”
