Chapter 16 - The Plan for the Lake Road
The encrypted emails described a detailed plan.
After Emily recorded the financial confession, Daniel intended to drive her to the family’s isolated cabin near Lake Rowan.
He would claim she wanted privacy before leaving the country.
Her car would later be found near a dangerous section of mountain road.
The doors would be unlocked.
Her purse would remain inside.
The forged confession would make police believe she fled after stealing company funds—or ended her life from guilt.
Lorraine wrote most of the instructions.
Daniel responded with concerns about cameras and traffic records.
Neither expressed concern for Emily.
The final email was sent two nights before the bedroom assault.

Emily closed the laptop.
For several minutes, she could not speak.
Rachel sat beside her without touching her.
Finally, Emily whispered, “He told me to pack comfortable clothes.”
Daniel had said they might leave the city after breakfast.
She had assumed he meant separation.
He had been preparing to take her to the lake road.
Federal prosecutors added kidnapping conspiracy, attempted obstruction, and conspiracy to cause serious harm to the charges.
Daniel and Lorraine were denied bail.
When Lorraine learned investigators had opened the encrypted file, she blamed her son.
In a recorded jail call, she told her attorney Daniel had become careless because he enjoyed frightening Emily.
Daniel responded by accusing Lorraine of designing the entire scheme.
Their alliance collapsed.
Each began providing evidence against the other.
Lorraine revealed where Daniel hid original ledgers.
Daniel explained how his mother created the shell companies.
Investigators recovered almost all the stolen funds.
They also arrested Dr. Hale.
His report describing Emily as delusional had been written before their only appointment.
He received $400,000 through one of Lorraine’s vendors.
Emily’s name was formally removed from the criminal investigation.
The bank issued a public statement acknowledging that her identity had been stolen.
But legal innocence did not erase what happened inside the house.
At night, Emily still woke believing the bedroom door was locked.
She could not look at smoke detectors without remembering Daniel’s raised hand.
Rachel recommended a trauma counselor named Dr. Anna Brooks.
Emily almost refused.
Daniel had used a corrupt psychiatrist to make her doubt herself.
