Chapter 18 - Guilty
The jury found Daniel guilty on every major count.
Wire fraud.
Identity theft.
Forgery.
Conspiracy.
Domestic assault.
Coercion.
Kidnapping conspiracy.
Obstruction of justice.
Lorraine was convicted of financial conspiracy, identity theft, coercion, and participating in the plan to make Emily disappear.
Charles Dane and Dr. Hale had already pleaded guilty.
At sentencing, Daniel finally looked at Emily.
“You destroyed my life,” he said.
Emily stood beside Rachel.
“No. You built your life on stolen pieces of mine.”
The judge sentenced Daniel to decades in federal prison.
He would not be eligible for early release until he was an old man.
Lorraine received a slightly shorter sentence, but long enough that she would likely spend the rest of her life behind bars.
The judge described Lorraine’s actions as particularly cruel.
“You did not merely support your son’s abuse. You instructed it, justified it, and watched it.”
Lorraine showed no emotion until officers led her away.
Then she looked toward Daniel.
He turned his back on her.
The relationship that had driven both of them ended in silence.
Outside the courthouse, reporters asked Emily how it felt to win.
She answered carefully.
“Justice is not the same as getting back what was taken.”
The money had been recovered.
The company was safe.
Her name had been cleared.
But Samuel was still gone.
Her marriage had still been a lie.
The bruise had faded, yet some mornings she still touched her cheek when frightened.
“Healing,” Emily continued, “is learning that what they took does not have to define what remains.”
The divorce became final one month later.
Daniel received no company shares.
No property.
No access to Emily.
The court restored the house entirely to her family trust.
Emily returned there with Rachel after the legal locks were changed.
She stood outside the bedroom door for a long time.
“Do you want me to go in first?” Rachel asked.
Emily shook her head.
