Chapter 17 - The Trial of Her Memory
The trial began nine months later.
Daniel appeared in a dark suit.
Lorraine sat at a separate defense table.
Neither looked at the other.
Daniel’s attorney argued that the financial crimes were committed by Lorraine and Charles Dane.
He described Daniel as a weak son manipulated by a controlling mother.
Then he turned toward Emily.
He claimed the bedroom confrontation had been staged.
“Mrs. Whitmore installed a camera, provoked an argument, and used the recording to remove her husband from the company.”
The attorney displayed photographs of Emily meeting Rachel before the assault.
“You were planning to take control, weren’t you?”
“I was planning to stop being robbed.”
“You remained in the house voluntarily.”
“I remained because Daniel was preparing to steal forty-two million dollars.”
“You could have left.”
Emily looked at the jury.
“That question assumes leaving was simple. My accounts were blocked. My reputation had been attacked. My husband had prepared medical documents declaring me incompetent.”
The attorney played portions of Dr. Hale’s evaluation.
Emily did not become defensive.
“The report was written before he met me.”
Dr. Hale had already admitted that under oath.
Rachel introduced the complete bedroom video.
The jury watched Daniel stand over Emily.
They heard Lorraine say, “This is his house.”
They heard Daniel describe the forced confession.
They watched the moment his phone received the freeze alerts.
The prosecutor then played the encrypted emails about Lake Rowan.
Daniel lowered his head.
Lorraine stared straight ahead.
Victor explained the shell companies.
The bank engineer demonstrated how Emily’s face had been fabricated.
Samuel’s trust attorney confirmed that Daniel could never legally obtain the voting shares.
Finally, Lorraine’s former assistant testified.
She had once asked why Lorraine hated Emily so intensely.
Lorraine answered:
Because her father took everything from us. His daughter will spend the rest of her life paying it back.
The trial was no longer about a troubled marriage.
It was about a family campaign built on revenge, theft, and control.
After six weeks, the jury began deliberating.
Emily waited inside the courthouse with Rachel and Dr. Brooks.
The clerk entered after only seven hours.
