Chapter 3 - The Company That Shouldn’t Exist

The account belonged to Whitmore Family Consulting.

Emily discovered it eight months after Samuel’s stroke.

She had returned to Carter Technologies for the first time in weeks, hoping to prepare for a board meeting.

An accounts-payable clerk approached her in the elevator.

“I’m sorry about the delay on your consulting invoices,” the woman said.

Emily frowned.

“What consulting invoices?”

The clerk turned pale.

She quickly apologized and left on the next floor.

Emily searched the internal payment system.

Whitmore Family Consulting had received $860,000 in less than a year.

Every payment had been approved by Daniel.

The listed company address belonged to Lorraine.

When Emily confronted her husband, he did not panic.

He laughed.

“My mother’s company provides market research.”

“Since when does your mother own a consulting firm?”

“She hired analysts.”

“There are no employees listed.”

“It’s a private company.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Daniel closed the office door.

“Because every time my mother’s name appears, you become suspicious.”

“I wasn’t suspicious until I found nearly a million dollars.”

He stepped closer.

“You have no idea how corporations work.”

Emily stared at him.

She had spent summers reviewing product designs with her father. She had attended board meetings since she was twenty-two.

Daniel knew that.

But he spoke as though she were a child interrupting an adult conversation.

That night, he arrived home carrying flowers.

He apologized for raising his voice.

He explained that Lorraine had introduced the company to several valuable investors.

The payments were legal, he promised.

Emily wanted proof.

Daniel brought her a signed agreement the following morning.

Her own signature appeared as an approving board representative.

Emily did not remember signing it.

Daniel reminded her of a stack of papers she had reviewed during Samuel’s hospitalization.

“You were exhausted,” he said. “It’s understandable.”

For several days, Emily questioned her own memory.

Then she compared the signature to one on her passport.

The shapes were identical.

Even the ink break above the letter E matched perfectly.

It had not been written twice.
