Chapter 11 - The Story Daniel Told the Police
Federal agents entered with Rachel and two local officers.
Daniel immediately raised both hands.
“My wife is having a breakdown,” he said.
Emily stared at him.
He spoke calmly, as though the last ten minutes had never happened.
“She attacked me when I tried to stop her from transferring company funds.”
Lorraine nodded quickly.
“I saw everything. Daniel was protecting himself.”
Rachel stepped into the bedroom.
“The security system recorded the entire encounter.”
Daniel looked at the smoke detector.
Only then did he notice the blue light.
An agent collected the folder from the bed.
Inside were the forced confession and forged share-transfer documents.
Emily showed the officer her cheek.
A paramedic photographed the swelling.
Daniel continued talking.
He said Emily had become paranoid after Samuel’s death.
He mentioned Dr. Hale.
He described the guardianship petition.
He claimed the hidden camera proved Emily had been planning to frame him.
Rachel handed the lead agent Samuel’s trust agreement.
“She installed the system after discovering repeated identity theft and financial fraud.”
Daniel pointed at Emily.
“She authorized every transaction.”
“Then why were you forcing her to read a confession?” Rachel asked.
He had no answer.
Agents seized the phones, laptops, and documents inside the house.
Lorraine attempted to leave through the kitchen.
An officer stopped her with a suitcase near the garage.
Inside were jewelry, cash, and three external hard drives.
She claimed the bag had been packed for a vacation.
One drive contained copies of the shell-company ledgers.
Daniel was arrested for assault, coercion, identity theft, and conspiracy to commit wire fraud.
Lorraine was detained for financial crimes and obstruction.
As officers led Daniel downstairs, he looked at Emily.
“This company will collapse without me.”
Emily pressed an ice pack against her cheek.
“No. It almost collapsed because of you.”
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“You still don’t understand what your father did.”
Emily froze.
“What are you talking about?”
Daniel smiled as the officers pulled him away.
