Chapter 12 - The Photograph in the Old File
Rachel brought Emily to a secure hotel while investigators searched the house.
That evening, Victor Lang arrived carrying a sealed archive box.
Inside was an employee file from Carter Technologies’ earliest years.
The name on the folder was Lorraine Pierce.
Lorraine had worked for Samuel before marrying Daniel’s father.
She had been a junior accountant.
A faded photograph showed Lorraine standing beside Samuel at the company’s first office.
Emily stared at it.
“My father knew her?”
“Very well,” Victor replied.
Twenty-seven years earlier, Samuel discovered that Lorraine had redirected vendor payments into a private account.
The amount was small compared with Daniel’s later theft.
But the method was almost identical.
Samuel confronted her quietly.
Lorraine repaid part of the money and resigned before criminal charges were filed.
Samuel believed he was protecting a young single mother from prison.
“That mother was raising Daniel,” Emily said.
Victor nodded.
Lorraine never forgave Samuel.
She claimed he had ruined her career.
Years later, Daniel entered corporate finance.
Lorraine taught him everything she knew about shell companies, copied signatures, and hidden vendor contracts.
The emails recovered from her hard drive revealed the truth.
She had recognized Emily’s name when Daniel mentioned meeting her at a charity event.
Lorraine encouraged the relationship.
An early message read:
Samuel took our future. His daughter can return it.
Emily’s stomach turned.
“Daniel married me because his mother wanted revenge?”
Rachel answered carefully.
“We cannot know whether every feeling was false. But the financial plan began before your engagement.”
Another message from Lorraine appeared three days before Daniel proposed.
Once the trust is accessible, Samuel will finally understand what it means to lose everything.
Emily left the room and stood alone beside the hotel window.
Her marriage had not simply become corrupt.
It had been built on an old grievance she had never known existed.
Rachel joined her.
“Your father should have told you.”
“He was ashamed he let Lorraine walk away.”
“He believed mercy would end the matter.”
Instead, Lorraine had raised Daniel to finish what she started.
Yet one question remained.
If Samuel knew Lorraine was Daniel’s mother, why had he allowed Daniel inside Carter Technologies?
