Chapter 2 - Before the Doors Started Locking
Five years earlier, Daniel had seemed like the safest man Emily had ever known.
They met at a charity dinner hosted by Carter Technologies, the home-security company founded by Emily’s father, Samuel Carter.
Daniel was confident without appearing arrogant.
He listened when Emily spoke.
He remembered small details.
By the end of the evening, he knew she hated champagne, preferred black coffee, and had spent most of her childhood taking apart alarm systems in her father’s workshop.
Daniel worked in corporate finance.
He told her he admired what Samuel had built.
“A company that protects ordinary families,” he said. “That matters.”
Samuel was less impressed.
“He asks about the company more than he asks about you,” her father warned.
Emily dismissed the concern.
Daniel had grown up with very little. His ambition seemed natural.
Lorraine had raised him alone after his father abandoned them. Daniel described his mother as a brave woman who sacrificed everything for him.
When Emily met Lorraine, the older woman embraced her warmly.
“You’re exactly the kind of woman Daniel deserves.”
At the time, Emily thought it was a compliment.
She did not understand that Lorraine measured people by what they could provide.
Daniel proposed after eleven months.
Samuel asked Emily to sign a prenuptial agreement protecting her shares in Carter Technologies.
Daniel did not object.
“I’m marrying Emily, not her company.”
That answer finally softened Samuel.
After the wedding, Daniel joined Carter Technologies as a financial strategy consultant.
He worked long hours.
He saved the company money.
Within eighteen months, Samuel promoted him to chief financial officer.
Emily was proud of him.
Then Samuel suffered a stroke.
His recovery was slow, and Daniel began handling more decisions.
At first, he brought documents to Samuel’s hospital room.
Later, he claimed Samuel was too confused to review them.
“Your father needs peace,” Daniel told Emily. “Let me carry this burden.”
Emily believed that was love.
