Chapter 15 - The Account Bearing Her Name

News of the twenty-eight-million-dollar account leaked before investigators could complete their review.
By evening, reporters stood outside the hotel.
Headlines called Emily both a victim and a suspect.
Daniel’s attorney released a statement.
Mr. Whitmore attempted to protect Carter Technologies after discovering financial misconduct committed by his wife.
The account contained Emily’s name, Social Security number, passport copy, and digital signatures.
Money had been transferred from company reserves over eighteen months.
Several withdrawals appeared to originate from Emily’s phone.
Rachel studied the records.
“This was built carefully.”
“Can we prove I didn’t open it?”
“The bank verified the account through video identification.”
Emily felt cold.
“A video of me?”
Rachel obtained the footage.
It showed Emily sitting in Samuel’s old office and confirming her identity.
Her face moved naturally.
Her voice answered every question.
But Emily had never recorded it.
Carter Technologies specialized in security technology.
Daniel had access to years of product demonstrations featuring Emily’s face and voice.
He had used artificial video manipulation to create the verification.
The technology was convincing.
Not perfect.
A company engineer found inconsistencies in the reflection of Emily’s glasses and delays between her speech and breathing.
Still, Daniel had done more than fabricate a video.
He had arranged withdrawals from locations Emily visited.
He had used her phone’s copied location data.
He had created a complete history around the false account.
“He planned this from the beginning,” Emily said.
Rachel shook her head.
“Not from the beginning. The account opened after Samuel’s first stroke.”
Daniel initially intended to steal quietly.
When Emily discovered the forged consulting agreement, he built the account to destroy her if necessary.
Investigators searched his private cloud storage.
They found a folder titled INSURANCE.
Inside were scripts for the fake videos, copies of Emily’s identification, and drafts of the public statement accusing her.
One file remained encrypted.
The password hint was a date.
Emily recognized it.
The day Daniel first met her.
The file opened.
It contained an email from Lorraine.
If Emily refuses, the accident must look voluntary.
Emily stared at the sentence.
“What accident?”
Rachel continued reading.
