Chapter 14 - The Boardroom Ambush

Emily entered the boardroom with the bruise still visible.

Conversation stopped.

Some directors looked ashamed.

Others looked irritated that she had appeared at all.

The temporary chairman, Charles Dane, opened the meeting.

“Given the criminal allegations involving Mr. Whitmore, we must stabilize the company.”

Emily took her father’s former seat.

“I agree.”

Charles slid a resolution across the table.

It proposed transferring temporary executive control to him.

Rachel read the document.

“This gives you authority over every account the court just froze.”

Charles stiffened.

“Someone must run the company.”

“You approved seven Whitmore consulting contracts,” Emily said.

“I relied on the CFO’s recommendations.”

“You also witnessed two of my forged signatures.”

Charles looked around the room.

“I witnessed electronic authorization.”

Rachel placed a forensic report on the table.

The metadata showed that both authorizations were created from Charles’s office computer.

Federal agents entered through the rear doors.

Charles stood.

“This is outrageous.”

Victor Lang connected a laptop to the boardroom screen.

The hidden audit displayed every shell-company payment.

Daniel approved the transfers.

Lorraine received them.

Charles verified them.

In return, one shell company purchased a vacation home used by Charles’s family.

Two directors immediately moved away from him.

The agents arrested Charles for conspiracy and fraud.

Emily addressed the remaining board.

“For months, you were told I was unstable. None of you called me.”

No one answered.

“You accepted my silence because it was convenient.”

An older director lowered her eyes.

“We failed you.”

“You failed the employees whose retirement funds Daniel risked.”

Emily presented Samuel’s trust agreement.

The voting shares remained protected.

As the principal beneficiary, Emily nominated Rachel as temporary independent trustee and Victor as forensic financial officer.

The board approved both appointments unanimously.

For the first time since her father’s stroke, Emily’s company was outside Daniel’s control.

But the forensic audit revealed another missing file.

Twenty-eight million dollars had been moved months earlier.

Unlike the other funds, it had not gone to Lorraine’s shell companies.

It had been transferred to an account in Emily’s name.
