Chapter 5 - The Papers Hidden in the Safe
Rachel arranged to meet Emily at a quiet public library.
She brought copies of company filings, property transfers, and medical correspondence.
A petition had already been drafted requesting emergency guardianship over Emily.
The document claimed she suffered from delusions and could no longer manage her finances.
Dr. Hale had prepared a supporting statement after only one appointment.
If a judge approved the petition, Daniel could control Emily’s personal accounts, company shares, medical decisions, and home.
“He hasn’t filed it yet,” Rachel explained. “He’s keeping it ready.”
“For what?”
“To use if you stop cooperating.”
Emily felt the room tilt.
Rachel touched her wrist.
“Stay with me.”
Emily took a slow breath.
“Can we stop him?”
“We need evidence that the signatures were forged and that he is acting knowingly.”
“The copies aren’t enough?”
“His attorneys will claim you authorized electronic signing.”
Rachel advised Emily to remain calm around Daniel and quietly collect original documents.
That night, Emily waited until Daniel and Lorraine went to a company dinner.
She entered Daniel’s office.
The safe behind the bookcase used the same six-digit code as his personal phone.
Inside were property deeds, private bank statements, and the draft guardianship petition.
Emily photographed every page.
Then she found a folder labeled TRANSITION.
The first page outlined a plan to remove her from the Carter Technologies board.
The second transferred voting control to Daniel.
The third authorized a wire of forty-two million dollars to a foreign investment fund.
The final page described Emily’s expected public resignation.
“Due to ongoing mental-health challenges, Emily Carter Whitmore has chosen to step away from all professional responsibilities.”
The statement was dated two weeks in the future.
They had already written the announcement of her collapse.
A car door closed outside.
Daniel and Lorraine had returned early.
Emily replaced the papers, shut the safe, and moved toward the office door.
The hallway floor creaked.
Daniel’s shadow appeared beneath it.
“Emily?” he called.
