Chapter 9 - The Warehouse

The warehouse contained more than stolen narcotics evidence.

Investigators found boxes from sixteen closed cases.

Firearms.

Cash.

Photographs.

Witness recordings.

Unlogged phones.

And one metal cabinet labeled CONSULTING ARCHIVES.

Inside were private files on police officers, judges, attorneys, and city officials.

Charles had collected leverage for decades.

Affairs.

Debts.

Addictions.

Disciplinary complaints.

Family secrets.

He used information to influence promotions, investigations, contracts, and retirements.

Mark’s career was one transaction among many.

Amanda discovered the charity fraud first.

Then she discovered the archive.

She threatened to expose it.

Charles confronted her at the fundraiser.

She left in his car because she believed he was taking her to speak with the commissioner.

Instead, they drove north.

Ross received photographs from the warehouse search while still at the party.

He looked at Ella.

“They found Amanda’s purse.”

Helen gasped.

Charles closed his eyes.

The purse had been missing since the night Amanda died.

Inside was her wallet.

A broken bracelet.

And a small cassette recorder.

Amanda had been recording interviews for the charity audit.

The tape remained inside.

Ross asked Charles:

“Do you remember what she recorded?”

Charles said nothing.

The tape was older than the digital files.

Older than altered servers.

Older than every lie built afterward.

And unlike witnesses, it had never been intimidated.
