Chapter 2 - The Envelope Beside the Shield

Captain Ross did not remove the evidence immediately.
He let the silence work.
Mark stared at the envelope.
“What is this?”
Ross placed one hand over Mark’s detective shield before Mark could touch it.
“Don’t.”
The single word carried more authority than anything Charles had shouted.
One Internal Affairs investigator, Special Agent Nora Keene, stepped beside Ross.
The second investigator, Thomas Vale, moved toward the patio gate and quietly asked uniformed officers to remain on the property.
Charles laughed.
“You are detaining an entire party?”
Keene looked at him.
“We’re preserving witnesses.”
“This is harassment.”
“No,” Ella said. “This is timing.”
Mark turned toward her.
“You planned this?”
Ella wiped bloodless moisture from the corner of her mouth.
“I planned for you to tell the truth.”
“I didn’t do anything.”
“Then why are you afraid of the envelope?”
Mark looked at his father.
Charles answered for him.
“My son earned that shield.”
Ross finally broke the seal.
Inside were three items.
A copy of Mark’s detective examination results.
A photograph of a police evidence locker.
And a red evidence-control tag bearing Mark’s badge number.
Mark’s face changed.
Ross held up the test results.
“You scored eleven points below the promotion threshold.”
Several officers exchanged looks.
Mark recovered quickly.
“That’s impossible.”
Keene handed him a second sheet.
“The official system shows a passing score entered twelve hours later.”
Charles stepped forward.
“Administrative corrections happen.”
“Yes,” Keene said. “But promotion scores are not corrected from a retired officer’s home computer.”
Every eye turned toward Charles.
He smiled thinly.
“I haven’t had department access in years.”
Ross looked toward the security camera.
“The department may not have given you access.”
Ella said quietly:
“But Mark did.”
Mark’s jaw tightened.
Then Vale approached from the gate.
“Captain, we found the vehicle.”
Charles stopped breathing.
Ross asked:
“Which one?”
“The black sedan registered to Bennett Security Consulting.”
Charles’s private company.
Vale continued:
“There’s an evidence transport case in the trunk.”

The case should not have existed outside an NYPD facility.
And the initials written across its seal matched the cold case Ella had discovered upstairs.
