Chapter 15 - Why Ella Contacted Ross

Ella had not approached Ross because of Amanda’s file.

That came later.

A month before the party, she found a photograph in Helen’s attic.

Charles’s black sedan beside the Hudson River.

The date stamp matched the night Amanda died.

Ross’s name appeared in an old newspaper article about the investigation.

Ella contacted him secretly.

At first, Ross said little.

He had no authority to reopen the case based on one photograph.

But he told her to preserve everything and never confront Charles alone.

Ella began noticing patterns.

Her father asked where she spent lunch.

Mark knew when she visited her mother.

A car followed her from work.

Then someone entered her apartment without stealing anything.

Only her desk had been searched.

Ross arranged for Internal Affairs to monitor the situation.

The call before the toast was an agreed signal.

If Ella found evidence or felt threatened, she would call and leave the line open.

Ross was already attending the party because Charles had invited him as a symbolic gesture of reconciliation.

Charles believed showing Ross beside Mark’s promotion would make old suspicions disappear.

Ross accepted because it placed him inside the property legally.

No one expected Ella to find Amanda’s file upstairs.

No one expected Charles to assault her in front of the camera.

But once he did, every hidden system began moving.
