Mark wrote from prison.
He did not ask Ella to visit.
The letter contained one confession not included in his plea.
He had found Amanda’s file a year before the party.
Charles told him to destroy it.
Mark could not.
He hid it in his old bedroom.
Part of him wanted it found.
Ella read that sentence twice.
It did not absolve him.
He still moved evidence.
Still altered records.
Still applauded the assault.
But hiding the file preserved the case.
Perhaps conscience survived beneath ambition.
Ella answered with one line:
Keeping evidence was the first honest thing you did. Testifying was the second. Keep counting from there.
