Chapter 18 - The Father Mark Worshiped

Mark built his identity around Charles.
As a child, he wore his father’s police cap.
At eighteen, Charles arranged his cadet placement.
At twenty-two, Charles called precinct supervisors on his behalf.
Every promotion followed a private dinner.
Every complaint disappeared after a phone call.
Mark called it mentorship.
It was corruption.
In the recorded jail meeting, Charles told him:
“You owe me your career.”
Mark answered:
“You stole it from someone else.”
Charles smiled.
“Everyone gets help.”
“You changed my score.”
“You would have passed next year.”
“You made me believe I earned it.”
Charles leaned closer.
“You did earn it. I only corrected the system.”
That was how Charles justified everything.
Fraud became correction.
Threats became discipline.
Murder became protection.
Mark asked:
“Did you ever love Ella?”
Charles looked annoyed.
“She always questioned everything.”
“That isn’t what I asked.”
Charles said nothing.
Mark stood.
At the door, he turned.
May you like
“You didn’t make me a detective.”
“You made me evidence.”
