Chapter 12 - Deputy Inspector Grady

Paul Grady had retired with honors.
His photograph still hung in a precinct lobby.
He attended police funerals.
Spoke at academy graduations.
Mentored senior officers.
When investigators arrived at his home, he denied knowing Amanda.
Then they played the tape.
His attorney ended the interview.
A search warrant uncovered charity ledgers, cash, and correspondence with Charles.
Grady had protected the scheme from above.
He reassigned Ross.
Pressured the medical examiner.
Removed the fabric sample.
Ordered the case closed.
In exchange, he received a percentage of stolen charity funds and access to Charles’s blackmail archive.
The archive kept officers loyal.
The charity funded the operation.
Amanda threatened both.
Grady was arrested.
News of the arrest spread through the department before dawn.
At precincts across New York, officers removed his photograph from walls.
Captain Ross gave a statement outside headquarters.
“No badge, rank, family name, or length of service places anyone above investigation.”
Ella watched from her mother’s living room.
Her cheek had begun to darken.
Helen sat beside her.
Mark remained in custody.
Charles had been charged with assault, evidence tampering, conspiracy, and obstruction while prosecutors prepared the homicide case.
Helen looked at Ella.
“Do you hate me?”
Ella answered honestly.
“I don’t know what I feel.”
“I watched him hurt you.”
“Yes.”
“I was afraid.”
“So was I.”
Helen began crying.
Ella did not immediately comfort her.

Fear explained silence.
It did not erase its cost.
