The black fabric found beneath Amanda’s fingernail had disappeared from the original evidence room.
But a crime-scene technician had photographed it before transfer.
The weave matched Charles’s formal NYPD overcoat from that era.
The coat appeared in dozens of photographs.
Then it vanished after Amanda’s death.
Helen remembered Charles burning a garment in the fireplace.
She believed it was his shirt.
Investigators excavated ash trapped beneath the old fireplace insert.
Modern analysis recovered synthetic fibers consistent with the overcoat.
A metal uniform button survived.
The manufacturer’s mark and year matched Charles’s coat.
Combined with the tape, the car photograph, and Grady’s testimony negotiations, prosecutors had enough to present murder charges.
Charles learned in jail.
His attorney delivered the news.
For the first time, Charles requested to see Ella.
She refused.
He then asked to see Mark.
Mark agreed.
Not because he wanted reconciliation.
Because Internal Affairs permitted the meeting under surveillance.
Charles entered the visitation room still acting like a commander.
“Tell them Ross fabricated everything.”
Mark stared at him.
“Did you kill Amanda?”
Charles’s expression hardened.
“She endangered all of us.”
“That is not an answer.”
“It is the only answer that matters.”
Mark leaned back.
