Chapter 7 - The Security Camera Above the Patio

The camera beneath the patio roof had been installed by Charles’s security company.
He believed he controlled it.
He did not know Ella changed the backup destination that morning.
Weeks earlier, she noticed party cameras were configured to upload to a private Bennett Security server.
She redirected one stream to an encrypted cloud account.
The change looked insignificant.
It preserved everything.
The slap.
The hair pull.
Mark’s applause.
Charles’s threats.
And something else.
Before Ella came downstairs, the camera recorded Mark and Charles speaking alone beside the promotion table.
Ross played the footage on a tablet.
Mark said:
“What if she found Amanda’s file?”
Charles answered:
“She won’t understand it.”
“And if she does?”
Charles looked directly toward the house.
“Then we remind her what family loyalty costs.”
Mark laughed.
The guests watching the recording did not.
Ross paused the video.
Mark looked around the patio.
Officers who had toasted him twenty minutes earlier now avoided his eyes.
His promotion certificate remained on the table beneath the evidence envelope.
The shield at his waist looked heavier.
Charles pointed toward Ella.
“She illegally recorded a private event.”
Keene replied:
“The assault occurred in front of thirty witnesses.”
“She provoked me.”
Ella’s expression did not change.
“What did I say?”
Charles hesitated.
She repeated:
“What did I say before you slapped me?”
No one answered.
Ella looked at the camera footage.
She had said:
“Why was Amanda’s file upstairs?”
That was all.
May you like
Charles attacked her because she asked a question.
And his response had activated the investigation he spent seventeen years preventing.
