Chapter 19 - The Promotion Certificate
The department formally revoked Mark’s promotion.
His certificate was retained as evidence.
His shield remained in Captain Ross’s custody.
Mark resigned before termination proceedings concluded.
It did not spare him prosecution.
He pleaded guilty to evidence tampering, unauthorized system access, obstruction, and theft of department property.
In exchange for testimony against Charles, Grady, and others, prosecutors recommended a reduced sentence.
At sentencing, Mark asked to address Ella.
The judge allowed it.
“I clapped when Dad shoved you,” he said.
Ella met his eyes.
“I know.”
“I thought humiliating you proved I was loyal.”
“It did.”
Mark flinched.
“Loyal to the wrong person.”
He nodded.
“I don’t expect forgiveness.”
“Good.”
The answer was not cruel.
It was honest.
Mark received six years.
Some officers called it too harsh.
Others called it too lenient.
Ella stopped measuring justice by whether everyone agreed.
The sentence did not return Amanda.
It did not erase Mark’s applause.
But it made the record truthful.
